Psychology.me for Research

Your study, on validated instruments or your own items

Create a study, share one link, and download item-level data in the formats your analysis already reads. Consent, the background questions and the end screen are built in.

  • No participant account
  • CSV, codebook, SPSS syntax, R loader
  • Stored in the Netherlands, encrypted in transit
How it works

Five steps from a question to a data file

  1. 1

    Create a study

Name it, add your own consent text under the fixed Psychology.me sentence, and choose which background questions to ask.

  2. 2

    Choose the instrument

A published instrument from the catalogue, or a form of your own items that you write and publish in the dashboard.

  3. 3

    Share the link

One open link per study. Add a participant reference to it, from Prolific or your own list, and it travels into the data file.

  4. 4

    Follow the responses

Started and submitted counts, and submissions by day. Set a participant cap and open and close dates if you want them.

  5. 5

    Download the data

Five files, one click each. Every download is written to the study log.

Participants

What a participant sees

A participant opens the link, reads the consent, answers the background questions the study asks, completes the instrument and closes the tab. No account, no email. You decide what the last screen shows.

  • Their full report

The instrument's detailed report, shown on the spot and at no cost to them. Needs an instrument with norms.

  • Their free result

On a catalogue instrument, the free result Psychology.me shows for it. On a form of your own items, their answers grouped by topic, with no score and no comparison.

  • A thank-you

Nothing but thanks. Not available on an instrument with a crisis pathway, which always shows its help resources.

Your data

Item-level data in the shape your analysis expects

Every export is built from the same responses, so the five files agree with each other.

CSV, long
One row per participant and item, with the response, its state and the timing basis.
CSV, wide
One row per participant, one column per item, the study columns first.
Codebook, JSON
Item text, type, options, value labels, keying and the missing codes.
SPSS syntax
Reads the wide file and applies variable and value labels and the missing ranges.
R loader
Reads the wide file into a typed data frame with the labels attached.

In the file: the item responses, the response states, the consent versions each participant accepted, the reference your link carried, and the background answers the study asked for.

Never in the file: a name, an email address, an account, an IP address or a browser identifier.

With the reference and the timestamps the file is pseudonymous, not anonymous. Treat it as personal data of your participants.

Your own items

Write a form, publish it, run it as a study

A form is your own set of items: rating scales, single-choice questions and text answers, with an optional eligibility question that ends the study for those it does not apply to. Publish it and choose it as the instrument of a study. It is never scored and produces no report; its end screen is a summary of the answers, or a thank-you.

  • Item ids become variable names, checked against SPSS naming rules when you save.
  • A published form is fixed; a change is a new form, so every data file names the version it came from.
  • Plain text only, in English or Montenegrin.
Privacy and roles

You are the controller. We process for you.

Psychology Me Ltd processes your study data on your behalf. The consent page tells every participant the one use we make of their answers for ourselves: research and the scoring of our tests, separated from anything that could identify them. Read the privacy policy

  • Kept apart

Your studies, forms and data are kept apart from every other account's. Another account cannot read them.

  • Study log

Study changes and exports are recorded for your account.

  • Withdrawal

A participant who withdraws by writing to us has their answers deleted and drops out of your later exports.

  • Where

Servers in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, encrypted in transit, with nightly backups and encrypted offsite copies.

FAQ

Before you create an account

Do participants need an account?

No. They open one link, complete the study and close the tab.

Can I recruit on Prolific?

Yes. The link accepts the Prolific participant id, the end screen shows your completion link, and a participant your form's eligibility question screens out goes to your screen-out link.

Who gives ethics approval?

Your institution's ethics committee, where your study needs it. You obtain the approval; we provide the data-processing summary for your application and do not review studies.

Which languages?

English, and Montenegrin for instruments and forms written in it.

Whose data is it?

You are the controller of your study data. Export it at any time; it stays available to you while your seat is active. We use pooled, de-identified answers only as the consent page says.

Can I run an instrument that is not in the catalogue?

No. Write it as a form of your own items, or ask us about it.
